Verve Music Group is releasing Rod Stewart's latest work, Merry Christmas Baby, on October 30th. This is a special collection of Christmas songs, included in the album are some traditional holiday classics including Silver Bells, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, and White Christmas amongst others. There is also an original song, Red-Suited Super Man, written by Rod Stewart, David Foster, and Amy Foster.
Before I share my opinions on the Merry Christmas, Baby CD let me share that I am a huge Rod Stewart fan, always have been. I do not normally do music reviews but when I was offered this opportunity I could not turn it down, I mean it's Rod Stewart! I grew up listening to Rod Stewart in the 1980's (Miss Jackie is revealing her age here) and have always loved Rod. The blond hair, bedroom eyes, and that deep throaty voice give Miss Jackie heart palpitations. Seriously though Rod Stewart has been a musician for decades with many hits including Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?, Young Turks, and Maggie May. Now that I am done drooling over Rod I will move on to the actual review.
I enjoyed the entire Merry Christmas, Baby CD. Rod Stewart brings a unique twist to the holiday classics Silent Night and White Christmas. His version of Santa Claus Is Coming To Town is breezy and his accompaniment on Winter Wonderland is spot on. Merry Christmas, Baby will make you want to dance or get up and move, I could actually picture Rod dancing when this song was playing, it is probably the song on the album that expresses Rod's style the best. Blue Christmas is soulful. The song co-written by Rod, Red-Suited Super Man, has an upbeat tempo and is contemporary. If I had to select a favorite song from Merry Christmas, Baby it would be a tough decision between the Duet with Mary J. Blige, We Three Kings, and Rod's version of What Child Is This which is very powerful and moving. There are 13 songs on the album with three bonus tracks.
Whether you are a Rod Stewart fan or not I recommend you add Merry Christmas, Baby to your holiday music collection. This album has many Christmas/holiday classics as well as some fresh new works mixed in.
